Do you have an amp? it sounds like your head unit isn't getting enough power to go that loud! Maybe you should get an amp (might have the same problem), or get a new battery, or sort out the wiring (if thats what is causing the lack of power). To test this, try hooking a 12v transformer from your house mains to the radio. If this fixes the problem it must be either the battery or the wires running from the battery to the head unit (most likely the battery).
How loud you trying to go?

not too loud,i hooked it up straight to the car battery and it worked fine but iv got the stalk adapter and that needs power too i tried to run the adapter and stereo off the battery and it did the same so i thought it might be the adaptor so i hooked it up the stereo to the car stereo harness and the same happened

Are you sure it wasn't a fluke when you hooked it up straight to the battery?
If it doesn't work with the stalk adapter straight to the battery then there must be a lack of power, or the head unit might be broken.
Did your previous head unit work fine?
If the unit does work when connected directly to the battery, but not through the harness, there may be something funny going on between the two - there could be a step down of voltage or something. You could run a wire from another 12v (from the fuse box?) to the head unit or straight from the battery.
