For 40 pounds your not going to get much of a sub I would start of with a pre made ported box and sub combo but I would be looking to spend at least £70 what sort of amp will you be using I know my local halfords has a fusion kit of ported box with 12" sub, 200w amp and the wiring kit for about £130 and you really couldn't go far wrong there
